Radiofrequency ablation or RFA, is a pain intervention where needles are placed under ultrasound or xray guidance to target area. These target areas usually have tiny nerves that are the pain generators.

While there is the term ‘radiofrequency’, there is no thermal damage when this therapy is applied.

The huge umbrella of regenerative therapy includes prolotherapy (injection of dextrose) and platelet rich plasma (PRP). Dextrose is believed to incite localized inflammation, hence gathering cells involved in healing to the injured area.

These headache syndromes may be treated with radiofrequency ablation via x-ray guidance.

This option of pain intervention usually involves a mixture of steroids and local anaesthetic. They may augment radiofrequency procedures, or be performed as a sole procedure.

This is an advanced pain procedure to either place opioids/ local anaesthetic in the spinal cord (usually for terminal pain) or have electrodes generating pulses to change the way the spinal cord interprets pain signals.
